Rain forces a no-result after Tendulkar's century for India against England

CHESTER-LE-STREET, England (AP) - Rain derailed India after a swashbuckling century by Sachin Tendulkar in a day/night one-day international against England at Riverside on Thursday. The match ended without a result because of the weather.

After Tendulkar's 105 not out had propelled India to 285 for four, England was 53 for one in 12.3 overs when its run-chase was cut short by rain. Both India and England have 10 points in the triangular series while the third team, Sri Lanka - winless in three matches - is in danger of not qualifying for the final on July 13 at Lord's. Opener Nick Knight, 17 runs, and skipper Nasser Hussain, nine not out, were together when umpires David Shepherd and Dave Orchard took the players off the field. The game was finally abandoned at 8:15 p.m. local time.

Earlier, Tendulkar had entertained a capacity crowd with his first one-day century against England and the 32nd of his 260-match career.

It was a princely innings by the record-breaking batsman.

It also rescued India from an early trouble after skipper Sourav Ganguly had fallen to the first ball of the day following his decision to bat first.

At 52 for three, Tendulkar joined by Rahul Dravid, 82 off 117 balls, lifted the side with a 169-run stand that lasted 34 overs.

After reaching his 50 off 72 balls, Tendulkar, cut loose and took just 34 balls to score his second 50 and struck a six and seven fours in all.

It had taken Tendulkar 13 years and 22 games to score his first one-day hundred against England since his debut.

Tendulkar's late hitting with Yuvraj Singh, who smashed 40 off 19 balls, overshadowed Dravid's invaluable contribution.

Dravid hit seven fours and was caught on the boundary in the 45th over when he chanced his arm after the 206-ball alliance with Tendulkar.

Singh, who has been in superb form - scoring 64 not out and 31 in his last two outings - dominated the 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket off just 33 balls.

The late onslaught saw India score 106 runs in the last 10 overs.
