LEEDS, England (AP) - Marcus Trescothick hit 82 runs off 60 balls to inspire England to a three-wicket one-day win over Sri Lanka with four balls to spare Tuesday. Sanath Jayasuriya's 112 had helped Sri Lanka to a formidable 240 for seven but England hauled in the total in near darkness at Headingley.
Trescothick's innings - his second half-century of the series - upstaged Jayasuriya's 12th one-day international 100 after the game had been reduced to 32 overs-a-side due to rain. Sent into bat, Sri Lanka was given a kick-start by Jayasuriya, who hit nine boundaries and five sixes, to give his side hopes of its first win in the triangular series, also involving India.
But despite losing wickets regularly, England held on against a six-man attack to register its second win in the tournament. Sri Lanka has lost all three of its games.
Losing Nick Knight to the fourth ball of the innings failed to dampen England's hopes and Trescothick, who scored 86 against Sri Lanka in the tournament opener, shared 68 runs off 50 balls with a promoted Ronnie Irani, 27, to lay the platform.
When Trescothick was caught on the long on boundary after hitting 11 boundaries, Stewart, 38 not out, and Paul Collingwood, 38 off 36, shared a match-winning 66-run stand.
England lost Collingwood four runs from victory, but Darren Gough, who had earlier taken 3-45 returning from injury, hit the winning runs.
Earlier, Jayasuriya reduced his vice-captain Marvan Atapattu, 18 runs off 36 balls, to a mere spectator during their 92-run stand for the second wicket off 86 balls.
Jayasuriya enjoyed much luck - he was caught off a no-ball, survived a run out and was dropped - before he finally holed out to long on in the 28th over.
There were also pinch-hitting contributions from left-hander Avishka Gunawardene, 20 off 21, and Upul Chandana, who hit a six and four boundaries in his 30 runs.
