German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn wins Golden Ball Award

TOKYO (AP) - German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won the Golden Ball award on Tuesday for his performance during the World Cup.

Kahn, who allowed just three goals in the tournament, garnered a total of 147 media votes to beat out Brazilian striker Ronaldo for the award, given to the best player in the tournament. Ronaldo had 126. South Korean captain Hong Myung-bo finished third with 108 votes.

Ballots were cast by journalists present at the World Cup third-place game between South Korea and Turkey played at Daegu, South Korea, and the final between Germany and Brazil at Yokohama, Japan.

Brazil defeated Germany 2-0 to win the cup for the fifth time.

The award is sponsored by sportswear manufacturer Adidas.
