13. Who was the Renegades MVP during the 2002 season?
Members from the Ottawa chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada Association selected linebacker John Grace (No. 7) as the Renegades representative for the league's most valuable player award, and the team's top defensive player. The media also selected linebacker Kelly Wiltshire (No. 1) as the team's top Canadian, long snapper and linebacker Steve Glenn (No 50) as the top player on special teams, offensive lineman Seth Dittman (No. 64) as the top lineman and running back Josh Ranek (No. 30) as rookie of the year.
14. How did the Renegades do in the inaugural season of 2002?
Pretty well for an expansion team. The Renegades finished the 2002 season, the first in team history, with a 4-14-0-2 record. That means we had four wins, 14 losses, no ties and two overtime losses. We finished last in the CFL East Division with 10 points. However, some of our losses were close. We won our final game of the season in Montreal, so we'll begin the 2003 season on a winning streak.
15. Did the Renegades highlight any league honours in 2004?
The play of both rookie receiver Jason Armstead and veteran running back Josh Ranek attracted national attention last season.
Armstead was the East selection as the most outstanding special teams player.
Armstead, who had an outstanding professional season in his first year as a pro, ended up being a runner-up for the John Agro award -- falling to long-timer CFL'er Keith Stokes of Winnipeg.
Armstead, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound native of Moss Point, Mississippi was a solid addition to the Ottawa club in 2004. The 25-year-old was the team's third leading receiver, hauling in 41 balls for 608 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the team leader in all-purpose yards (2,306), third in yards from scrimmage (625) and tops in kickoff return yards (700), punt return yardage (821) and missed field goal return yards (four for 160).
In the return categories, Armstead ranked third in punt returns and sixth in kickoff returns.
The former star at Ole Miss continued to improve as the year went on. After a quiet start, Armstead's electrifying catches and returns led to a four-game streak of consecutive touchdowns. On October 9, at home against Saskatchewan, he had 317 all-purpose yards.
Meanwhile, in the Ottawa offensive backfield, Ranek continued to shine, being named one of the conference's top running backs.
Ranek, who recorded his second consecutive season of over 1,000-yards rushing, joined Troy Davis as the two finest running backs in the East.
The 26-year-old South Dakota native makes the all-star team for the second consecutive year. He is also the first Renegades player ever to have back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons and is the all-time leading rusher (2,871 yards).
Ranek's third season as a Renegade was another good one. The South Dakota State product had 219 carries for 1,060 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He also grabbed 59 passes for 673 yards and two touchdowns. The 5-foot-8, 210-pound back, who has played in 49 games in the CFL, led the team in yards from scrimmage (1,733) and second in all-purpose yards (2,174).
16. Who was the Renegades MVP during the 2004 season?
The Football Reporters of Canada chapter from the capital took Josh Ranek as the Renegades representative for the league's most valuable player award. The press also went with Kelly Wiltshire as Ottawa's Most Outstanding Canadian and top defensive player, while George Hudson took the lineman nomination. Newcomer Jason Armstead was selected as the team's top rookie and best special teams player.
