NFL teams up with City of Windsor on "Boundless Playground" Super Bowl XL Legacy Project
Commemorative Logos Honouring Windsor’s Role in Super Bowl XL and 100-Day Countdown also unveiled
Toronto -- The National Football League (NFL) and the City of Windsor today announced plans for a Football-themed "Boundless Playground." The project is part of the NFL's commitment to enhancing communities that host Super Bowl games and NFL fans from around the world.
"Each year Super Bowl host committees bestow a legacy from the game that remains long after the fans depart," said DAN QUINN, Managing Director, NFL Canada. "Canadian NFL fans and the city of Windsor are playing a significant role in the hosting of Super Bowl XL, so this legacy project is a way for us to say thank you and to use sport as a means to foster community development in Windsor."
The barrier-free Boundless Playground will provide opportunities for all children, including those with disabilities, to play side-by-side. Boundless Playgrounds are specifically constructed to enable all children - including those with physical, developmental, cognitive and sensory disabilities - to experience stimulating and challenging play.
The playground will be built in conjunction with City of Windsor Parks and Recreation and will be located on Riverside Drive near Caron Avenue. The facility will feature ample parking and restroom facilities and will offer an unparalleled view of the Detroit skyline. Expected to be completed by Fall 2006, the playground will become the focal point of a complete environmental park and a family destination.
"For children and their families," said Windsor MAYOR EDDIE FRANCIS, Chair of the Super Bowl XL Canadian Host Committee, "the Boundless Playground will be a microcosm of Super Bowl XL itself - a stimulating place for everyone to come for fun, celebration and new experiences in good company. For Windsor overall, the playground will be a constant reminder of how our community came together with NFL Canada and Detroit as a truly competent, hospitable and exciting two-nation destination, hosting thousands of visitors from around the world."
The NFL and the City of Windsor also unveiled an official NFL logo commemorating the City of Windsor's unique role in helping to stage and host Super Bowl XL. The logo, matching the style, theme and colours of the official Super Bowl XL logo, includes a maple leaf and the word Windsor.
The logo unveiling and "Boundless Playground" announcement also kick off a 100-Day Countdown to Super Bowl XL.
"The unveiling of this Canadian Host Committee logo is a proud statement of who we are and what we are achieving together," added Mayor Francis. "Together, the Windsor and Detroit communities, in partnership with the National Football League, have reaffirmed that we are an attractive international destination, both for Super Bowl XL and for many other major international events to come."
Earlier this summer the two organizations also announced a series of local events designed to enhance Super Bowl XL for Canadians. Super Bowl XL will be played in Detroit on February 5, 2006. The event centrepiece is the Rbk Fan Zone, an all-ages interactive football theme park including interactive games, clinics, NFL player and cheerleader appearances, autograph sessions, a Canadian broadcast centre and Pro Football Hall of Fame memorabilia. More officially sanctioned Windsor Super Bowl XL events will be announced in the weeks to come.
Earlier this spring the league also announced that a Windsor-based Reebok Flag Football team would participate in the national championship tournament next fall, that a free Junior Player Development session would be held in the city and that a Windsor-area tryout would be held for the Canadian team that will be participating in the NFL Global Junior Championships during Super Bowl week in Detroit.
