NFL ratings touchdown: Huge ratings increases on Global and TSN to start the 2005 season
Audience numbers increase in all demographics for first four Sunday broadcasts
Toronto, October 11, 2005 -- The National Football League (NFL) today announced significant year-to-date ratings increases for its Sunday afternoon broadcasts on Global and Sunday evening broadcasts on TSN.
The first four NFL Sunday broadcasts on Global Television have been seen by 47 per cent more Canadians than the first four broadcasts in 2004.
TSN has recorded similarly impressive gains for its Sunday night broadcasts. Overall viewership of the first four Sunday night broadcasts of the 2005 season has increased by 28 per cent over the first four Sunday night broadcasts of 2004.
"So far this season we have seen tremendous and exciting increases in the number of Canadians watching the NFL on Global, particularly adult males," said Adam Ivers, Vice President, Programming, Global Television. "Seventy per cent more 18-49 year old males have tuned in to our first broadcasts this season than last, and the increase is even greater - 87 per cent - for the male 25-54 year-old demographic."
Sunday evening NFL broadcasts on TSN have also seen a major increase in the key demographics compared to the first four broadcasts of the 2004 season. The 18-34 year-old male audience for Sunday night games has increased by 52 per cent over the same period last year, the 18-49 year-old male audience by 28 per cent and the 12-17 year audience has increased by 167 per cent.
"We're off to a great start this season," said Phil King, President, TSN. "The NFL has always had a strong following here in Canada, and it keeps gaining momentum, thanks in large part to the competitiveness and intriguing storylines each season."
The NFL is currently in the second year of a four-year agreement with TSN. The network broadcasts 25 games each season, including exclusive Canadian coverage of 18 Sunday night games. Every Sunday night match-up throughout the regular season will be televised in High Definition on TSN HD, available on Bell ExpressVu channel 850, Rogers Digital Cable channels 407/503, Cogeco Cable channel 278, Videotron channel 660, Access Communications channel 506, and Southern Ontario-based Mountain Cable channel 641..
Global has the rights to all Sunday afternoon broadcasts in Canada, airing the 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. games, which can be seen on Global nationally, or on CH in Ontario and BC. Global also airs all NFL Playoff Games and the Super Bowl.
