Atogwe Signs Three-Year Deal
Wednesday, July 27, 2005

With one day before the official start of training camp, the Rams signed safety Oshiomogho Atogwe to a three-year contract Wednesday.
The rookie out of Stanford is expected to compete immediately for one of the starting safety spots in the Rams' secondary. As it stands, Adam Archuleta and rookie Jerome Carter will enter camp as the safeties, but at least one of those positions remains wide open.
Carter, who was the first rookie to sign (doing so on April 28), got a leg up on Atogwe at the team's June mini-camp. Because classes were not done at Stanford yet, Atogwe missed those workouts, allowing Carter the chance to shine.
Others in the mix for that position include Michael Stone, Michael Hawthorne, Mike Furrey and perhaps Ronald Bartell, who will likely play cornerback, but could slide to safety eventually.
Atogwe said in April that he looks forward to the competition.
"I feel like they brought in a lot of DB's for a reason," Atogwe said. "Competition will end up bringing out the best players with whoever can stand the heat. I feel like it's good for the team."
In his time at Stanford, Atogwe made 241 tackles. His signing leaves the Rams with five unsigned picks including first-rounder Alex Barron, Bartell and sixth-round choices punter Reggie Hodges and receiver Dante Ridgeway.
