Waterloo, ON - Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) is excited to announce that the third annual East West Bowl will be broadcast live from University Stadium on Sunday, May 15 at 4:30 p.m. ET on TSN, Canada's Sports Leader. The East West Bowl consists of a week of events that brings together over 200 football players, 200 coaches and thousands of fans, as some of Canada's best university football players showcase their skills in front of NFL and CFL coaches and scouts.
The East West Bowl originated in 2003 by the Canadian University Football Coaches Association (CUFCA) in partnership with NFL Canada and the CFL. It was built to showcase the following year's draft eligible players to the NFL and CFL and build grass roots football through a coach's clinic and minor football events.
"Speaking on behalf of CUFCA, I would like to reiterate the significance of the annual East West Bowl. Not only does this event allow CIS Football to showcase its top athletes, but the working relationship developed between the CFL and CIS Football is invaluable to the development of our game in Canada. The agreement with TSN to televise the game provides an important opportunity for players to compete in front of family and fans across the country. An occasion like this does not occur often for many of our athletes, and I am sure you will see a tremendous effort by all those fortunate enough to be competing." Blake Nill, CUFCA President, Head Coach Saint Mary's University Huskies.
The inaugural game was driven by former McMaster Head Coach and current Hamilton Tiger-Cats Head Coach and CFL Coach of the Year, Greg Marshall.
"The East West Bowl is a great event for CIS players and a great scouting tool for the CFL. Having it on TSN raises the profile of the game and provides the athletes with a national stage to compete on. TSN is a natural fit for this game with their continued support of CIS football's Bowl games, the Desjardins Vanier Cup and the CFL. This is a perfect event for television and now people across the country will be able to see just that." Greg Marshall, Head Coach Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Over the last two years the East West Bowl has seen many talented players take the field. From the 2003 game, 24 players were drafted in the CFL Draft out of a total 53 players taken. Three more players from this game signed free agent contracts in the CFL.
"The East West Bowl has proven to be a great resource for our scouting staffs over the past few years, giving them first-hand access to evaluate future CFL talent. With partners like TSN on-board, this year's event extends beyond the stadium to highlight some of the top performers of amateur football across the country. We are excited to once again be a part of this great week of football." Kevin McDonald, Manager Football Operations, CFL.
The 2005 rosters will be announced next week. The West team will be led by Brian Towriss, Head Coach of the 2004 Desjardins Vanier Cup finalist University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The East are looking for their first win and will be led by Head Coach Glenn Constantin of the back-to-back Vanier Cup Champion Laval Rouge et Or.
