    Avalanche 5, DUCKS 4

    Kariya scores twice in loss

  • Summary

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Brad Larsen and Chris Drury scored consecutive goals in the third period to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-4 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in NHL exhibition play Wednesday night.
Larsen's unassisted goal came with 15:50 left in the final period. Drury scored with 11:52 to play in the game on a power-play goal to give the Avalanche their third win against one loss in the pre-season.
Paul Kariya scored two goals for Anaheim (1-3), the second goal just 11 seconds after Drury, to account for the final Anaheim goal.
Colorado defenseman Martin Skoula scored with a 35-foot shot to give the Avalanche a 3-2 lead 1:30 into the final period. The Ducks tied the score at 3-3 just 1:24 later when Kevin Haller scored on a power play.
The first of Kariya's two goals came on a tip. The Ducks' Mike Crowley passed to Kariya, who picked the puck off in mid-air and guided it into the net. That goal gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead with 14:24 left in the second period.
With two Anaheim players in the penalty box, Colorado's Joe Sakic evened the score with 2:14 left in the second period when he skated by an Anaheim defenseman and hit the upper right corner with a slap shot.
Milan Hejduk scored the Avalanche's first goal. Tomas Sandstrom tied it with a breakaway goal.
