Roy's still the man for Avalanche

By BARRE CAMPBELL -- Ottawa Sun
The years keep passing by, but Patrick Roy isn't showing any sign that he's ready to end his career.
In fact, the 34-year-old goalie from Quebec City is getting little rest this season, his 16th in the NHL.
Roy started last night's game in Montreal for the Colorado Avalanche, and will likely be in net at the Corel Centre for tonight's grudge match against the Senators.
If that's the case, then Roy would have started all but one of Colorado's first nine games of the season. Young backup Marc Denis has started only one.
"Patrick should play quite a bit overthe next couple of weeks," said Colorado coach Bob Hartley to the Rocky Mountain News earlier this week. "Patrick is on top of his game right now. He's in great shape. He's leading by example."
Roy underwent minor hip surgery during the off-season and missed part of training camp and the exhibition schedule.
But he has shown little discomfort during his performances.
"I'm very happy with the way things are going right now," Roy told the Denver newspaper. "I'm very comfortable right now. I'm going out there and concentrating on the game. I feel good."
With every victory, Roy gets closer to the all-time lead for goalie wins, a mark held by the legendary Terry Sawchuk who won 447 regular season games.
Roy had 415 wins before last night's game in Montreal and is closing in on Tony Esposito (423) and Jacques Plante (434).
"I haven't thought about it, but if the question is how many wins I need to get it, yes, I know," said Roy. "I try to enjoy that. It should be fun."
