Tuesday, January 26, 1999 Sakic named player of the weekNEW YORK (CP) -- Colorado centre Joe Sakic is the NHL player of the week after scoring four goals and adding an assist in five games.Sakic was a plus-4 over the week as the Avs finished the week undefeated, extending their winning streak to five games. Sakic edged Toronto left-winger Steve Thomas (three goals, three assists and six points in three games) and Ottawa goaltender Ron Tugnutt (2-0-0 in two games, 1.00 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage) to capture his third career player of the week award. Sakic began the week with a two-goal performance on Jan. 19 in a 5-4 road win over the Los Angeles Kings. On Jan. 21, he had two power-play goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist in a 4-2 home victory over the Calgary Flames. Playing in his 11th NHL season, the 29-year-old native of Burnaby, B.C. has 46 points (20 goals, 26 assists) in 36 games, ranking 13th in league scoring and leading his team in goals. Sakic is on pace to record his fifth career 100-point season.
