Forsberg signs $30 million deal
DENVER (AP) -- All-Star forward Peter Forsberg agreed today to a three-year, $30 million contact extension with the Colorado Avalanche.Under the contract, which begins next season, Forsberg will be paid $8 million the first year, $9 million the second year and $9.5 million the third year, with a $3.5 million bonus spread over the three years.
Forsberg, the NHL rookie of the year in 1994-95, has equaled a career-high in goals this season with 30 and has a total of 97 points, his highest total since the 1995-96 season, when he posted 116 points.
In getting together with Forsberg before he could test the free-agent market, Avalanche general manager Pierre Lacroix said the ownership showed it was determined to have a strong team when the Pepsi Center opens next season.
Forsberg, a native of Sweden, was the first-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, sixth overall, in the 1991 entry draft. He was traded to Quebec with five other players, future draft picks and cash for Eric Lindros on June 30, 1992.
A franchise-type player, Forsberg is known as Sweden's "Magic Boy" and is the first hockey player to appear on a Swedish postage stamp.
Forsberg was a 1994 Olympic gold medalist, scoring the game-winning goal in a shootout against Team Canada.
He led the Avalanche in scoring with 91 points during the 1997-98 season.
