Friday, October 8, 1999 Primeau, 'Canes still far apartNEW YORK (CP) -- Centre Keith Primeau is no closer to re-joining the Hurricanes than he was a week ago, when he rejected a two-year, $7 million US deal from Carolina."There's no movement, nowhere for me to go," GM Jim Rutherford told the Philadelphia Inquirer. Agent Don Reynolds is looking for more than $4 million a year for Primeau, who has become a solid NHL player in nine seasons and at six-foot-three, 225 pounds and has become Carolina's most physical forward. He was also the team's most productive forward last season with a team-high 30 goals and 62 points. The longer Primeau remains unsigned, Rutherford says, the less likely he'll have a fully productive season. "History shows that players who miss camp are never the same," Rutherford said. "The longer they sit, the further behind everyone else they get." Primeau, 27, is a restricted free agent. Rutherford could have traded him but has chosen not to because he says no club has given him a solid offer. Plus, Rutherford believes a trade would send the wrong message to the other players on the club. "I can't trade Primeau because I have a salary squabble with him," Rutherford said. "Other people will see that as a way out of town."
