Saturday, October 2, 1999 Primeau says noRejects new contract offer from 'CanesThe 6-foot-4 centre rejected a two-year contract worth $7 million US, leaving the Hurricanes without two of their top three scorers from a year ago when they open their season tonight in Boston. Ray Sheppard, who finished third in the club's points race, still is looking for work as an unrestricted free agent. He recently talked to Sabres coach Lindy Ruff about a job. Meanwhile, veteran centre Ron Francis yesterday replaced Primeau as team captain. "Unfortunately, a bad decision has been made here that cost the player money, and as time goes on it's going to cost more," Rutherford said of Primeau's holdout. The Whitby native is asking for $5 million per season.
