2003 World Cycling Championships Fast Facts

When: October 6-12, 2003

Where: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Who:
- Some of the teams expected to attend will be Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, Russia, Germany, USA, Australia and the Netherlands.
- 800 athletes from 50 countries
- 800-1,000 media to cover event
- 2,000-3,000 volunteers required to host this event
- 250,000 estimated spectators over the course of one week will visit Hamilton and the region

Features:

  • Only the 2nd Time the event has been held in Canada - the previous event was held in Montreal in 1974

  • Federal government contribution of $10 million to the 2003 World Cycling Championships

  • Provincial government contribution of $2.25 million to the 2003 World Cycling Championships

  • 1st time a World Road Championship has been held entirely within City limits.

  • World Road Cycling Championship (WRCC) rarely leaves Europe - had only done so 5 times in history of Championship

  • Expect approx. 800 athletes from over 50 countries to compete at the 2003 event
