Monday, June 30, 1997Tyson takes punch out of Pay-TVFrank Sisson, who regularly shows big fights on closed-circuit TV, said Tyson's shocking actions Saturday night against the world heavyweight champ gave the sport another black eye. "We were doing real good with big rematches and were getting the crowds back -- now Tyson does that and it just ruins all credibility," said Sisson. "It was terrible, there's just no excuse for stupidity like that -- Tyson destroyed the faith of fans and made boxing look stupid." Sisson said the "bites felt around the world" are especially damaging because heavyweight boxing is the sport's major drawing card. But Ken Billinghurst, a Calgary promoter, trainer and member of the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame, said the sport will survive. "That's absolutely one of the worst things I've ever seen in the world of boxing," he said. "But boxing has survived a lot worse things than that and when cooler heads prevail, I think people will see it as an isolated incident." He said Tyson is "just one person, one individual who's more animal than human." |
