Thursday, June 26, 1997Tyson's trainer confident
The outlandish Giachetti, in one of his thoughtful moments yesterday, said Tyson will be a much better fighter this time against Evander Holyfield because he will be working off the jab a lot more and his overall balance will be better. Giachetti rejoined Team Tyson following Iron Mike's loss to Holyfield last Nov. 9. "I don't think I'm the best man for Tyson, I know I'm the best man," said Giachetti, who trained the former world heavyweight champion in years past. "We have a good chemistry together." The never-boring Giachetti also suggested that Tyson's three years incarceration on rape charges was good for the fighter. Tyson didn't fight from June 28, 1991 to Aug. 19, 1995. Giachetti called the down time a blessing in disguise. "Mike was fighting too much, he needed a break," Giachetti said. When asked if Team Tyson would be protesting the appointment of Mitch Halpern as the referee for Saturday's fight, Giachetti replied: "That's a rumor, but that's a good rumor." Halpern officiated Tyson-Holyfield I. VIVA CHAVEZ: Legendary lightweight Julio Cesar Chavez, 99-2-1, will go for his 100th pro victory when he faces lightly touted Larry Daniel La Coursiere, 22-6-1, of Hastings, Minn., on Saturday's card. TRASH TALK: Christy Martin, arguably the most popular female fighter in the history of the sport, got into a war of words with her opponent for Saturday, Andrea Deshong. Martin, 31-1-2 with 25 KOs, stirred the pot when she told Deshong: "This is the first time I've seen you dressed respectable, like a woman," and then made a vague reference to Deshong's girlfriend. Deshong replied that Martin, who calls herself The Coal Miner's Daughter, will be a dead canary on Saturday. Canaries were used by coal miners years ago to check for poisonous gas in the mines. "Ohhhh, the canary is dead," promoter Don King shouted. "Long live the canary!" |
