Don King breaks silence in Tyson case

NEW YORK (AP) -- Boxing promoter Don King said Thursday he would stand by former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, whose licence was revoked for at least a year after biting champion Evander Holyfield.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission revoked Tyson's boxing licence earlier in the week as punishment for biting both of Holyfield's ears and taking a chunk out of the right one during a heavyweight title fight June 28.
"The Nevada State Athletic Commission did what they felt they had to do, and I am not going to second guess the decision," King said in a statement released from the office of Don King Productions Inc. in Deerfield Beach, Fla. "Instead, I am going to do everything I can for Mike Tyson.
"I am not making excuses for Mike, but I know him and I know that he's a good human being," King said. "He's my friend and I stand with him. What happened that night was an aberration, a sad episode that all of us wish could have been avoided. It has never happened to Mike before and I believe it will never happen again."
Tyson is eligible to apply for reinstatement of his licence next July.
