When Jean-Philippe Roy finished a surprising eighth in the combined event and qualified for the Olympics at the world championships last
season, he knew he wasn't going to be able to make that call. Traditionally after every race Roy phoned his father, the man who taught him how
to ski from a toddler to his teenage years. But two years ago his father succumbed to cancer.
"He was always the first person I called after every race," said Roy. "I thought of him first after I knew I was going to the Olympics."
After a busy summer training in North America and New Zealand, Roy is hoping to at least duplicate last season's success.
"I gained a lot of experience last year and that showed in my results," said Roy, who left home at age 15 to pursue his skiing career.
