Regan Lauscher will be the first Canadian to compete in a women's luge event at the Olympics since Kathy Salmon raced at the 1992 Games in Albertville. Lauscher earned her final two qualification requirements last winter in her rookie campaign on the World Cup with top-12 finishes in Igls, Austria and Altenberg, Germany. In fact, last season she was a model on consistency placing between 11th and 20th in every race on the circuit.

Being the only woman on the team, Lauscher says she could use a teammate in her event.

"The guys are very co-operative and we work really well as a team," said Lauscher, who first jumped on a luge at age 14. "But the men's competition is much different from the women. They start higher on the track so it's difficult to talk about certain aspects of a race and compare performances."

However she's encouraged by the interest girls are showing in the sport.

"In the latest recruitment camps there's actually been more women than men," she said. "We have a lot of strong female athletes coming up and they are already giving me a run for my money. So I'm sure there'll be more Canadian women at the next Games."
