Shae-Lynn Bourne and her ice dance partner
Victor Kraatz took what they called a step backwards last season in order to move ahead and be
ready for the 2002 Olympic Games. The previous year they missed the world championships after Bourne underwent knee surgery.
The creative couple hired a new coach last year, (Russian Tatiana Tarasova) and moved to Newington, Conn. They feel they've rediscovered
some excitement in their skating.
"It's a step in the right direction because we didn't compete the previous season (at worlds)," said Bourne after their fourth place finish at the
worlds in Vancouver last March. "We had to get back into the game again."
It's hardly surprising that the eight-time national champions are trying somewhat to re-invent themselves. They have been bronze medallists four
times at the world championships and at the last Olympics they were fourth.
Their love of the sport keeps them churning out new and innovative ideas which makes them among the most popular figure skating acts in the
world.
Bourne started figure skating at age seven after watching her brother play hockey. She started ice dancing at age 15 and joined Kraatz in
1991. They were 10th at their first Olympics in 1994 and a few weeks later jumped to sixth at the world championships.
