To say the least winning the gold medal in women's aerials at the world championships last year has changed Veronika Bauer's outlook on her
sport. With the victory "Little V" as she is nicknamed, gained a berth on the Olympic team.
"Before, I was always able to focus on jumping to best of my ability," she said. "Now that I've won a major event, and I know I can medal, I feel
added pressure to be on the podium."
Bauer didn't have too much trouble adapting to freestyle skiing. She is a former gymnast and was the 1994 Ontario trampoline champion. She
said the bronze medal performances in trampoline by her former clubmates
Mathieu Turgeon and
Karen Cockburn at the Sydney Olympics
inspired her to do well last season.
Her breakthrough campaign was in 1998. Despite being a member of the development team, she posted four top-eight finishes on the World
Cup circuit and the following season was sixth at the world championships.
She says the anticipated warmer conditions in Salt Lake City should provide her with an advantage at the Games.
