Mercurys rising

Once the 'Forgotten Team' that in 1952 won our last Olympic hockey
gold medal, the Mercs have stood the test of time and just got hotter
yesterday when the already-famous club was named to our Oly Hall of Fame.
Fame is a funny game.
Sometimes it's fickle. Sometimes it's fleeting. And sometimes, it's almost
farcical.

Mercurys to be inducted in COA Hall of Fame
EDMONTON (CP) -- Water and ice are a common theme for the 2002 inductees into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
The Canadian Olympic Association announced Monday that the Edmonton Mercurys hockey team, swimmer Graham Smith, synchronized swimmers Penny and Vickey Vilagos, swimming coach George Gate and former Coaching Association of Canada president Geoff Gowan will be inducted at the annual Hall of Fame dinner next April at the Northlands Agricom.

No regrets from Olympic vet

"Sully" Sullivan flatly turned the offer down.
On the other end were the people from the Edmonton Mercurys trying to
convince the 35-year-old sensational centreman to lead their team at the 1952
Oslo, Norway Olympics as both a player and manager.

Crazy about those Mercurys

The old, predominantly red, woolen jersey, borrowed from the Hockey
Hall of Fame, will be hung in prime position in the Team Canada dressing room
in Nagano.
They've seen it before, Al Purves' Edmonton Waterloo Mercurys 1952 Olympic
sweater with the white maple leaf on the front and `Canada' stitched above his
No. 4 on the back. It was the first thing that grabbed their eye in the
staging room three weeks ago at the All-Star Game in Vancouver.
