Ailing Law won't miss Olympics

Canadian champ's injury called 'minor'

By Winnipeg Sun Staff

Kelley Law isn't letting an ankle injury prevent her from representing Canada at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Law, the skip of the Canadian women's Olympic curling team, sustained an ankle injury during a social function Saturday night at the KIA Master of Curling event in Gander, Nfld.

Law returned to Vancouver on Sunday to have her left foot examined by orthopedic specialist Dr. Bob McCormick.

Law, of New Westminster, B.C., was diagnosed with a strained ligament in the foot. She will undergo physiotherapy and is expected to make a full recovery by month's end. The Salt Lake City Games are slated to begin Feb. 8.

 A RELIEF

"It's a relief to learn that the injury is minor and that we can stick to our plan," Law said in a statement.

The plan was to have the Law team -- which also includes Julie Skinner, Georgina Wheatcroft, Diane Nelson, Cheryl Noble and coach, Gene Friesen -- arrive here on Sunday to train and play a series of exhibition games until Thursday before returning to Vancouver.

The Law team will by skipped by Skinner during exhibition games today against Don Duguid at noon and Cathy Overton-Clapham at 5:45 p.m. Both games will be played at the Granite Club.

"It was a great competition and a great learning experience for us to be playing against the top men's teams in the world," said Skinner of playing in Newfoundland.

"The stop (here) is a good opportunity for us to put priority on our training," said. "The Olympics are quickly approaching, so we want to be completely focussed on the task at hand."
