Owen Von Richter will join double Olympic bronze medallist Curtis Myden as
Canada's entries in the men's 400 individual medley. The eight-time
Canadian champion overcame some huge challenges to make his first Olympic
team this spring in his third attempt.
In 1992 at age 14, von Richter competed at the 1992 Barcelona trials to
gain some experience. But four years later, at the trials, medical
problems, including a rapid heart beat and a serious asthma condition
denied him a spot on the team.
However since then, Von Richter's bad luck seems to be fading. He made the
1998 Commonwealth Games team and posted two top-five performances and he
was a double bronze medallist at the 1999 Pan Am Games. He currently
studies at the University of Michigan.
