Women's weightlifting makes it Games debut at the Sydney Olympics in
September. Canada only has one entry, but it's a good one.
Maryse Turcotte won the silver medal in the clean and jerk at the 1998
world championships. In March at the Quebec university championships and
set a Canadian, Commonwealth and Pan Am record in the 58 kilo weight class
for the snatch, clean and jerk and overall total. In 1997, she was the
first woman in the Americas to lift double her body weight.
She started the sport at age 16 and since then has eclipsed more than 50
provincial and national records. She is sponsored by NHL defenceman
Sylvain Lefebvre under a program where several Quebec NHL players donate
money to a foundation which helps amateur athletes.
