Canada's only male fencer at the 2000 Olympics, Laurie Shong has overcome many obstacles to remain a versatile and talented athlete. In 1993, he was nearly killed in an automobile accident but cameback at the 1994 Commonwealth Championships to win gold in men's epee. He received the Harry Jerome Comeback Award that year for his performances. A former nationally-ranked swimmer, Shong was the first Canadian athlete to compete in two sports at one Olympics. At the 1992 Barcelona Games he participated in fencing and modern pentathlon an event which combines five unrelated sports: fencing, swimming, shooting, show jumping and running. In 1988 he won gold at the 1988 World Cadet Championships, the first Canadian fencer to receive a world champion title.

 In the past year he has won the bronze medal at the Pan Am Games and posted two top-10 World Cup results including third place in Bogota, Colombia. He works as an actor and model to help with training expenses.
