South Koreans set record in Olympic archery qualifying

SYDNEY (AP) -- A South Korean trio set a world record in the opening round of the women's archery event at the Olympics on Saturday, breaking the four-year-old mark of another South Korean team.

The team of Kim Nam-soon, Yun Mi-jin and Kim Soo-nyung scored 1,994 points to break the mark of 1,984 set by Kim Jo-sun, Kim Kyung-wook and Yoon Hye-young at the Atlanta Games. It was the third straight Olympics that a South Korean team broke the world record in the ranking round.

The South Korean team placed first, third and fourth in the individual rankings with Kim Soo-nyung having the top score of 671 out of a possible 720.

Italian Natalia Valeeva was second with 667 ahead of the other two South Koreans.

The event continues throughout the week with the team medal being decided on Sept. 22. The ranking in the preliminary round determines which archers face each other in the eliminations.
